The exam fee is 2,000 kr (Regulation 2026:451 on the citizenship test, §6) — separate from the 2,900 kr it costs to apply for citizenship itself. Under the transitional provision the fee is charged for the first time for exams held in 2027; the August 2026 pilot is free of charge.

Who needs to take the citizenship test?
The requirement applies to people aged 16–66. Many are exempt, for example via approved SFI, upper-secondary education, or Tisus.
What does the exam look like?
UHR has confirmed roughly 60 questions in 90 minutes, on paper and in Swedish. The pass mark has not yet been published by UHR — we don't guess.
What does the exam itself cost?
The exam fee is 2,000 kr and is charged for the first time for exams held in 2027 — the August 2026 pilot is free. The fee is separate from the citizenship application fee.
Is Sverigeprovet affiliated with UHR?
No. Sverigeprovet is an independent study aid, built by us. Always check uhr.se for official information.
What does it actually cost?
The exam fee to UHR is 2,000 kr and is charged for the first time for exams held in 2027. On top of that comes the 2,900 kr citizenship application fee — about 4,900 kr combined before an app even enters the picture. A failed attempt costs another 2,000 kr, so it pays to practise properly before you book.
When can I take the exam?
The first sitting is the pilot exam on 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan — free of charge, but registration is closed and the places are full. UHR has not yet published dates or opened booking for the regular, fee-based exam rounds.
What is the pass mark?
Not published by UHR. The mark is set after the pilot exam, the first time the questions are used in a real exam situation. We don't guess — and you should be skeptical of apps that state an exact number.
Can I be exempt from the exam?
Yes. The exam is just one way to meet the knowledge requirement: approved SFI (special course D), upper-secondary or municipal adult education grades, a university degree, or Tisus all work too. Fully exempt are stateless people born in Sweden under 21, Nordic citizens who become citizens by notification, and people with a disability or other reasons.
Will there be a language test too?
Yes, but not before autumn 2027 — the reform is introduced in stages, and the civics test comes first.

The official study material Sverige i fokus (UHR and Skolverket), 13 chapters. It's free and available as a PDF on uhr.se.
